Intussusception in Infancy and Childhood



Abstract
Intussusception is most important and frequent surgical disease in infancy and childhood. This clinical studies consist of 72 cases who were admitted to the St. Mary Hospital from 1st July ¢¥63 to 30 June ¢¥68.
1) In age, sex, seasonal incidency.
In our 72 cases, the youngest age is 2 months of age. 68%(49 cases) of the patients are under 1 year and 79% of the patient are under 2 years. The peak incidence occurs from the 9th to 12 months. In seasonal incidency, May and June are prevalent(32 cases). In sex distribusion, the ratio between male and female was approximately 3:1(54:18).
2) In etiologic analysis of the intussusception, only 3 cases revealed the causes(2 cases by small intestinal polyp, 1 case by Meckel¢¥s diverticulum).
3) In analysis of the intussusception type, ileocecal in 48%, ileo-ileal in 12.5%, ileocolic type in 16.9%, cecocolic type in 4.2%.
4) In review of the symptom and sign, the intermittent abdominal pain was noticed in 90%(65 cases), vomiting in 80.6%(58 cases), bloody and current jelly stool in 84.7%(61 cases), abdominal distension in 52%(38 cases), palpable mass in 55.6%(40 cases).
5) In the typical cases of intussusception the diagnosis can be made on the history and physical findings alone.
6) In treatment of the intussusception.
Of this 72 cases, operative intervention was resorted in 51 cases (Surgical reduction in 39 cases, surgical resection in 12 cases), and barium enema reduction in 21 cases.
7) Our mortality in 72 cases of the intussusception was 6.9%(5 cases in 72 cases).
But in 12 cases of the intussusception which were treated with surgical resection, the mortality was 33.3%(4 cases in 12 cases).
8) In our studies, the recrrant rate is 4.1%(3 cases in 72 cases).
